Seroquel (quetiapine) is a type of prescription medication called an antipsychotic drug. These medications often treat conditions that can cause psychosis or losing touch with reality, but they also help with different kinds of depression and anxiety—especially when first-line treatments aren’t enough.

There are two types of antipsychotic drugs. “Typical” antipsychotics refer to the first generation of these drugs, which were developed in the 1950s. “Atypical” antipsychotics, which were introduced in the 1990s, are considered second-generation drugs. They are just as effective as typical antipsychotics but are much less likely to cause complications such as movement and motor control problems.

Seroquel (quetiapine) is an atypical antipsychotic. It changes how certain chemicals (dopamine and serotonin) work in the brain.

Dopamine is a “chemical messenger” (neurotransmitter) that delivers instructions to nerve cells in the brain. It helps control mood, pleasure, motivation, memory, attention, and other functions. Serotonin is also a chemical messenger. It’s sometimes called the feel-good chemical because it helps regulate your mood and sense of well-being.

In people with depression or psychosis, dopamine and serotonin signals don’t work properly. Seroquel (quetiapine) works by blocking these abnormal signals.

What is Seroquel (quetiapine)?

Seroquel is a second-generation antipsychotic. It was developed in the early 1990s, and it was the first of the new generation of second-generation antipsychotics.

First marketed as a treatment for schizophrenia in the 1960s, Seroquel has become a household name for a big problem. Its nickname, or brand, is quetiapine.

Here’s how it works: Quetiapine targets dopamine and serotonin in the brain. Dopamine tells Seroquel to “trough” (bbedroom) the chemicals that make up serotonin. It doesn’t break down as easily as Seroquel. As a result, Seroquel won’t improve someone’s ability to feel pleasure and have a sense of well-being.

Seroquel can take several weeks to take effect. If it doesn’t see the effect right away, the medication may continue with another antipsychotic medication. Antipsychotic drugs err on the-head because they produce similar effects.

Even though Seroquel is the same as second-generation antipsychotics, there are two different differences between it and typical antipsychotics. The effect it has on someone with schizophrenia or depression can vary from person to person.

Someone with schizophrenia can’t change how someone thinks or feels. Second-generation antipsychotics don’t work as well. They have a different mode of action (stimulation) and a different risk of movement disorders.

Someone with depression with psychosis will respond better to second-generation antipsychotics to stimulation. Second-generation antipsychotics have a much lower risk of movement disorders compared to typical antipsychotics.

Someone with psychosis with depression will have a slightly different response to second-generation antipsychotics. Second-generation antipsychotics have a lower risk of movement disorders compared to typical antipsychotics.

Other serious side effects of second-generation antipsychotics include increased risk of blood clots, diabetes, and dementia.

The most common side effects of second-generation antipsychotics are constipation, insomnia, decreased appetite, and weight loss.

Seroquel may cause more constipation than typical antipsychotics. If constipation spreads to other parts of the body (such as the stomach or intestines), Seroquel may also cause some gastrointestinal side effects.

Less common gastrointestinal symptoms of Seroquel include diarrhea, ulcers, and bleeding. To reduce the risk of developing a serious side effect, take the first-line medication with food.

Remember, if you experience any of these serious side effects while taking Seroquel, call your doctor immediately or get emergency medical treatment. — James Roday, MD, PhD, is the authors and medical director ofThe Schizophrenia Association Journal.
